Looking for a nice hidden gem around Albuquerque? It is worth to try Kaktus!
Super friendly people. Excellent beers and great pizzas.
I would come once a week if I would live nearby. Highly recommended.
Great place!! We came because we were staying next door at the campground but would definitely come again if we were local!! Food was delicious and the beer was really good!! Live music with Justin Nunez who blew us away! Service was fast, friendly and felt like you were hanging out with friends.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover!”
What a delightful surprise we found in this little hole-in-the-wall brewery. We were a little apprehensive walking thru a sketchy path from the KOA RV park to the brewery but soon found a little jewel of a place. Nothing to look at but great beer. I like a dark beer but too often it’s bitter. Their dark sweet stout was mellow, strong full of coffee flavors and not bitter! The pizza was above average. The menu features good selections that deviates from the mundane. Background music was light jazz. Great selection for a cool place. Staff was limited but they worked hard to please us. Lots of outdoor seating. Thx Kaktus! Good job!
Update! 10-14-2023 Traveling thru Albuquerque once again with friends and stopped by for lunch. What can I say about Kaktus? Weird? ? Eclectic? Yes! And wonderful! Just the most unique little brewery. Meet Dana. A gracious host. Try the Porter. Delish! Take a growler home. The pizza was perfect and the hot dog appetizer was wonderful. Brings your friends and hang out in a truly great place.
A gem tucked into a neighborhood. Great pizza and pretzels. Good brews. And belly dancers? Who knew? A must go to!!!
Very good pizza and very kind. We were on the road arriving late and placed an order for pizzas to go. When we got there they offered to let us let us eat inside even though they had just closed, as I think they could tell we were road weary. Will definitely eat there again when in the area and try the beer next time.
We found this place through our app, harvest hosts. I’m so glad we decided to eat there, the pizza was delicious with a very light crust and plenty of options some very unique like the elk. They could not have been friendlier in the beer was tasty. Will stop back through there next time. We are in Albuquerque :-)
We are out of towners and this is A must try place especially if you are staying at the KOA next door- the small trail walk from KOA to Brewery.
Pet friendly, outside shaded area and food was super yummy.
They only offer 2 sizes of pizza.. the larger pizza is enough for 2 people only.
I am a BIG pizza connoisseur and the best way to describe the type of pizza they have: taste like Digorno pizza that is put in a woodfire oven so the bottom of pizza is toasty, pepperonis could have been cooked a little more also.. these were kind of raw. I also did not like the dirty tables outside, I had to find a rag from another customer to clean all the dirt off table.
But these are not big issues, over all 5⭐️’s for this reason 👍
The definition of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. You’d never see it by driving by. You turn onto a dirt road with potholes into what almost looks like a shantytown. Parking is in unmarked spots in the dirt parking next to the building.
You walk into the brewery, then take an immediate left into the restaurant. From there is attached patio seating with a small stage for live events.
Our group got an assortment of pizzas. The 7” pizza came with a balsamic vinaigrette salad, though they forgot the dressing on both our salads.
I ordered the wild spicy elk pizza, which came with red onion, mozzarella, mushroom, and a truffle oil drizzle. I asked twice for the truffle oil to not be added to mine, but it came with it anyway. The elk was elk link sausage cut into pieces about triple the thickness of standard pepperoni. The pizza wasn’t anything exciting. 3/5.
I also tried a slice apiece of:
- Pua’a (a Hawaiian, but with pulled pork, hoisin and marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pineapple): Delicious and an interesting sauce flavor profile. Definitely a 5/5.
- Quacker (duck sausage, bell peppers, spinach, and mozzarella): I didn’t love this one. It seemed to be lacking something. Instead of the breast they usually use, they used cut sausage links this time. 2.5/5; I would not get this one again, but duck on pizza is interesting.
- Red Pumpkin (pumpkin squash, goat cheese, marinara, pine nuts, and red chili drizzle). Delicious! I’d get this one again for sure. I never thought of squash, goat cheese, or pine nuts on a pizza, but it works very well. 5/5.
I got an apple cider, which was smooth and sweet. It wasn’t overly sweet or too sharp, which some breweries fall into.
Overall, an interesting experience. Two pizzas were hits with me, while I’d pass on the other two again. The service was fine; they don’t seem to focus on the details (providing salad dressing, guests having to ask for silverware, or making requested modifications), so diners will likely need to be more assertive than I was in getting service.
